How to Use the Pumpkin Stencils

Print the design you want at actual size for the largest version. If the face is too large for your pumpkin, choose a reduced percentage in the print dialog. You can print only one selected page instead of printing the complete PDF each time.

Trim away excess paper so the page bends more easily around the pumpkin. Tape the stencil in place, adding small folds in the paper where needed to follow the curved surface.

Trace each black shape with a marker, or have an adult prick along the edges with an appropriate tracing tool.

Remove the paper before carving. Cut along the transferred outlines and remove the sections that were black on the stencil. Leaving the light oval untouched ensures that only the facial features become openings.

Printing Tips

Regular printer paper works well because it is flexible enough to curve around a pumpkin.

Print in portrait orientation using black ink. Start with the page set to actual size, then scale it down only when the pumpkin is smaller than the design.

Before taping the stencil, hold it against the flattest side of the pumpkin and check the spacing around the face.

A smoother area helps the paper sit closer to the surface and makes the traced shapes easier to follow.

Pumpkin Carving Safety

Pumpkin carving involves sharp tools and can cause cuts. Adults should complete all carving and cutting.

Children can choose a stencil, help tape or trace the design, and scoop out seeds under supervision. Work on a stable, well-lit surface, keep hands outside the cutting path, and use tools intended for the task.
