Sewing your own socks is a satisfying way to turn stretch fabric or knit scraps into something useful.
This free printable sock sewing pattern includes one adult-medium sock base plus ankle, quarter, and crew band options, so you can choose the height that suits your project.
It also includes a stretch test, fit guidance, and a full-scale printing check because fabric recovery and printer settings affect the result.
Warning: Sewing involves sharp tools and moving machine parts, so supervise children and follow your equipment instructions. Fabric socks may slip on smooth floors and are not protective footwear.

What’s Included in This Sock Sewing Pattern
The first page contains materials, cutting preparation, and six assembly steps for sewing the base and attaching your selected band.
Page two is the full-scale adult-medium sock base. It includes key labels, stretch direction, a foot-length adjustment line, and a 1-inch print test square.
Pages three and four provide the full-scale ankle, quarter, and crew bands. The last page contains the stretch gauge, fit notes, safety guidance, and personal-use terms.
Choosing Your Sock Length
Choose the ankle band for the shortest finish, the quarter band for moderate coverage, or the crew band for the tallest option.
Finished rise is approximate because fabric recovery and seam depth affect height. Cut two identical copies of your chosen band.
All three bands share the same width and attach to the same opening. This keeps the construction method consistent even when the finished height changes. If you are unsure which option to choose, sew the ankle version first to confirm the foot fit, then use the taller band on a second pair.
Choosing Fabric for Sewn Socks
Use a light- to medium-weight knit with about 50% stretch in both directions and good recovery. A four-inch section should stretch to six inches and return close to its original length.
Avoid woven fabric, low-stretch fleece, and bulky material. Prewash and dry the knit as you plan to launder the socks.
How to Print and Prepare the Pattern
Print on US Letter paper at 100% or Actual Size and turn off automatic scaling. The page-two square must measure exactly one inch before cutting.
The base is drafted for a 9 to 10-inch adult-medium foot. Make one test sock, then use the marked line for length changes.
Cut four mirrored sock-base pieces to create two matched pairs. Cut two identical copies of your chosen band. Follow every maximum-stretch arrow so the fabric expands across the foot and around the opening.
Sewing the Multi-Length Socks
Place two mirrored base pieces right sides together. Sew around the shaped perimeter using the included 1/4-inch seam allowance, leaving the straight band opening unsewn. Use a narrow zigzag, stretch stitch, or serger so the seams can move with the fabric.
Sew the short ends of one band together to form a ring. Fold the ring in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Quarter-mark the band and sock opening, align the raw edges with right sides together, and stretch the band evenly as you sew.
Test the first sock for length, comfort, and band pressure before making the second. If an inside seam feels bulky, press it to one side and topstitch with a stretch-capable stitch.
